The Remaster

Bloody Dickle, the original, was the result 48 fevered hours holed up in the NYU Game Center tediously working on a concept that I swore would be so funny- Doom but tickling.

I'd never made a 3D game before, but it'd been something I was itching to do. So I threw myself into Unity 3D and learned many-a-concepts on the fly. The end product was unplayable, I did not succeed. But we were honored to receive Best Runner Up for visual design thanks to the amazing artists on our team: Mia, and Dade.

So at the end of the 2024 Global Game Jam we packed up assuming this was the end of that chapter.

Until:

Late last night I woke up in a cold sweat with two words echoing in my mind: "Bloody... Dickle"

No actually what happened was I randomly looked at the analytics for this game and realized for the past 365 days we've had a fair amount of traffic, more traffic than any other project on my itch page. I felt like my pants were caught around my ankles, Bloody Dickle was god awful. Textures were missing, there was a complete lack of sound effects, the player controller was rage inducing with how high the sensitivity was along with the fact that you couldn't look up or down, you could clip through the world, I don't even think you can actually attack the enemies. I don't know what was drawing people to our game other than the ridiculous name. So I decided with my last free weekend of the semester, I was going to spend 48 hours fixing everything.

I'd learned a lot in the year since I programmed the original Dickle, I'm pretty comfortable with 3D at this point- as you can see by the other titles on my itch page. So when I booted up the project and took a peek at the scripts I'd written, my jaw was on the floor. I honestly have no idea what the hell my past self was trying to do. I ended up scrapping basically every script in the game and remaking the systems from the ground up. From the original game to the game now, the only thing I saved was the menu screen, the end screen, the pixelation shader, and some of the 2D sprites.

I overhauled the textures, remeshed the level layout, imported new shaders and NavMesh, and I managed to implement a ton of audio we'd originally made but didn't have the time or know-how to use. I'm actually really proud of myself for fixing this game, it's that satisfaction you feel fixing up a busted car- I'm assuming- this is proof of my improvement over the course of a year, and I'm really happy I decided to spend another 48 hours of my life thinking about Dickle.

Shoutout to Chase for completing the Bloody Dickle experience! I remember working on this during Global Game Jam 2024 and descending into insanity (much like Kate T. Dickle herself). Ever since, it's been in the back of my mind. Huge thanks for addressing the pitfalls of the original game and turning all our hard work into a fully realized (and working) experience.

Shoutout to the original jam team too—around this time last year, we locked in and made something awesome. I was very happy to update our itch page for BLOODY DICKLE: XTRA BLOODY :)
